Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment

For patients with spider veins on their legs, our Saratoga Springs- and Albany-area medical spa often recommends sclerotherapy vein injections. Sclerotherapy is the “gold standard” for treating cosmetic leg veins. Performed carefully using magnification, a small amount of a sclerosing solution such as concentrated salt water is injected into the spider veins using a tiny needle. The vein walls collapse and your body absorbs the vein. This state-of-the-art treatment can effectively diminish the unwanted reddish-blue appearance of spider veins, providing you with more evenly toned skin.

What Does the Sclerotherapy Treatment Involve?

To perform the sclerotherapy procedure, a fine needle is used to deliver a sclerosing agent like highly concentrated salt water directly into the targeted vein. This solution causes irritation, leading to the spider vein’s collapse. Once the blood vessel has collapsed, it is gradually absorbed by your body. The entire process takes about 15 to 30 minutes, but this will vary depending on the size and location of the veins being treated. Treatment may cause mild discomfort and cramping but is typically not painful. Several treatments may be needed to reach a plateau. About 60% of women are genetically prone to getting spider veins. It is not unusual to have these recur, and retreatment in future years is common.

What Can I Expect in the Sclerotherapy Recovery?

The result of your sclerotherapy session can be seen in approximately 10 to 14 days, if not sooner. Mild side effects are possible, such as itching, redness, and bruising, but these should quickly fade. Bruising usually persists in the area treated for a week. Sclerotherapy may also cause brownish discoloration which may take a few months to resolve. You will need to wear support hose around the treated areas for a week after treatment to promote the absorption of the blood vessels. You may be recommended to return for additional sclerotherapy treatment to achieve optimal results. Follow-up sessions are often desired every 6 to 12 months to maintain the positive outcome.

Are There Any Alternatives to Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is the ideal solution for deep veins in the legs. However, depending on the specifics of your case, the excel V™ laser procedure may be appropriate in addition to or in place of vein injections. This advanced laser treatment is typically used to help diminish the appearance of dark spots, vascular lesions, and spider veins on the face, but it can also be beneficial for treating leg veins. When you come in for your consult, the most beneficial treatment option(s) for your unique condition will be explained in detail to help you make an informed decision about your care.

How Much Does Sclerotherapy Cost?

The cost of spider vein treatment with sclerotherapy typically begins around $300 per session. This widely varies based on the location and size of the areas being treated and the time needed to treat your areas of concern. Prior to your sclerotherapy procedure, you will be provided with a cost quote to ensure you understand what to expect.
