Chemical Peels
What is a chemical facial peel?
Exfoliation is critical to enhance the results of any skin treatment. A chemical peel uses a chemical – such as glycolic or lactic acid – to remove the outer superficial skin layer called the epidermis. Deeper peels using stronger chemicals can remove part of the underlying deeper layer called the dermis. Skin surface removal encourages your body’s healing mechanisms to go to work promoting skin renewal and cellular regeneration. Old sun and environmentally damaged skin is removed, and the results is newer skin that is pinker, smoother, and more youthful looking. Healing and recuperation depends on the chemical type and concentration used and the depth of the peel. Mild or superficial peels have no significant downtime and therefore are often referred to as “lunchtime peels” since you can immediately resume all of your regular activities. Typically, a series of 4 to 6 given with a frequency of every few weeks are needed to reach a plateau of a result, after which touch-up peels may be desirable every few months. Deeper peels are often associated with a few days of peeling or downtime but may require less frequent maintenance treatments.
What are the benefits of a medical facial peel?
Skin clarity improves. More even skin tone, more uniform color, and better texture are achieved. Fine lines and wrinkles are reduced. In many cases, the results reduce and may eliminate the need for using cosmetic foundation. As preventive medicine, this treatment may help reduce pre-cancerous lesions such as sun spots or actinic keratoses.
Who can benefit from a medical facial peel?
Whether your skin is environmentally or sun damaged, discolored, acne prone, or hypersensitive, an individualized peel program can effectively treat your specific skin condition.
Who is not a candidate for a medical facial peel?
Someone who is sunburned, has active cold sores, facial warts, moderate or severe rosacea, or extremely sensitive skin. Also, patients who are allergic to aspirin, have been taking Accutane in the last year, are currently receiving chemotherapy, or face radiation are typically not good candidates. Pregnant women or women who are breastfeeding should avoid having peels. However, in many cases lactic acid peels may be used to treat those with rosacea or overly sensitive skin.
Lactic Acid & Glycolic Peel
(Superficial peels, also known as “lunchtime peels”)
These are our most gentle chemical peels. These peels gently exfoliate the skin and reveal fresh skin. Most patients do not experience crusting or skin peeling. Lactic acid peels are good for sensitive or rosacea skin. Our glycolic peels are medical grade, using higher concentrations of glycolic acid than those typically used at beauty salons. These peels can be repeated every 2 weeks. Usually, a series of 6 initial peels provides optimal results. We recommend a maintenance treatment be given every month or two after the initial series of peels is completed.
SkinMedica® Peels – 3 Types
Illuminize Peel – the most superficial peel SkinMedica® offers
(very superficial peel for mild imperfections)
The Illuminize peel brightens and tightens skin for a more youthful appearance. This peel helps to reduce reduce visible signs of aging, including fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and pigmentary irregularities. It also enhances skin glow and radiance, and improves skin color, clarity, and texture. Illuminize is ideal for first-time peel patients or patients looking for quick skin enhancement. Expect to see little to no skin surface peeling. This peel can be repeated every 2 weeks. A series of peels provides optimal results. We recommend a maintenance program every month or two.
Vitalize Peel – deeper SkinMedica® peel
(deeper, but still a superficial peel for treating mild to moderate imperfections)
Vitalize peels reduce the appearance of mild to moderate skin imperfections, fine lines and wrinkles, sun damage, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation and melasma (“mask of pregnancy”). Expect mild to moderate skin surface peeling lasting 2 to 5 days after treatment. This peel can be repeated every 3 to 4 weeks. A series of peels provides optimal results. We recommend a maintenance program every month or two.
Rejuvenize Peel – the deepest SkinMedica® peel
(most potent superficial peel for treating moderate to severe skin conditions)
Rejuvenize is the strongest of the SkinMedica® peels designed to reduce the appearance of moderate to severe skin imperfections, fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, and melasma. Expect moderate skin surface peeling after each treatment lasting 2 to 5 days. This peel can be repeated every 4 to 6 weeks. A series of peels provides optimal results. We recommend a maintenance program every month or two.
